Feijoa: A seamless way to grow KiwiSaver savings

Saving for the future does not always need to feel like a big financial decision. Feijoa is designed to make saving feel easier by turning everyday spending into small KiwiSaver contributions that can add up over time.

Feijoa is a simple and secure round-up and rewards app that can help our members direct spare ‘change’ from everyday purchases into a KiwiSaver account - either their own, or someone else’s, such as a child, partner or whānau member. By rounding transactions up and putting the difference aside, Feijoa helps make saving part of your everyday life.

For the Mercer KiwiSaver scheme members, this creates another simple and accessible way to build long-term saving habits through small, regular actions.

Why Feijoa may appeal to Mercer’s KiwiSaver members:

  • Fits into everyday spending behaviour
  • Helps turn small amounts into regular contributions
  • Can support a member’s own KiwiSaver account, or someone else’s
  • Adds an extra layer of engagement through rewards and incentives
  • Designed to work across KiwiSaver schemes in New Zealand
  • Treated as a voluntary contribution, which means the recipient may be eligible for the KiwiSaver government contribution if they meet the relevant criteria.
  • Mercer KiwiSaver scheme members who sign up to Feijoa and use their app can also receive up to $15 added into their KiwiSaver account over 3 months using the referral code ‘MERCER’. T&Cs apply.

Frequently asked questions

What is Feijoa?

Feijoa is a simple and secure round-up and rewards app that helps KiwiSaver members grow savings through everyday spending. When a purchase is made, Feijoa rounds the amount up to the nearest $1, $2 or $5 and directs the spare change into a KiwiSaver account.

Members can contribute to:

  • their own KiwiSaver account, or
  • another person’s KiwiSaver account, such as a friend or whānau member.

Does Feijoa cost money?

Feijoa charges a fee after the first month to use the round-up feature. Please refer to Feijoa website FAQ’s for details.

How long does it take for round-ups to reach my Mercer KiwiSaver scheme account?

In most cases, round-up contributions appear in a KiwiSaver account within 3 to 5 business days after the transaction has settled and been processed.

Timing may vary depending on:

  •  transaction settlement
  •  payment processing
  •  Inland Revenue processing

Can I pause or stop using Feijoa at any time?

Yes. Users can pause round-ups, adjust round-up settings, or close their account at any time within the app.

How does account linking work for round-ups?

To use the round-up feature, users need to link:

  •  a transactional account, where eligible purchases are monitored for round-ups
  •  a funding account, from which round-up amounts and any related fees are taken

The same account can be used for both purposes. However, a credit card cannot be used as the funding account.

Feijoa uses Akahu, an open banking provider, to connect accounts securely. Where available, Akahu uses New Zealand’s regulated open banking system so users can authorise access directly with their bank.

Your money is safe with Feijoa. They encrypt your data, never see your login details and do not hold or manage your KiwiSaver funds. Feijoa is also a Registered Financial Service Provider and a member of the Financial Services Complaints Limited dispute resolution scheme.

What banks and platforms does Feijoa support for round-ups?

Feijoa supports a range of banks and platforms through Akahu.

The Feijoa FAQ page lists support for:

  • ANZ
  • ASB
  • American Express*
  • BNZ
  • Booster Savvy*
  • Co-operative Bank
  • Heartland
  • Kiwibank
  • Latitude (Gem Visa)*
  • NZHL
  • SBS*
  • Sharesies Debit Card*
  • TSB
  • Westpac
  • Wise*

*Some supported accounts can be used to monitor transactions for round-ups and rewards, but cannot be used as the funding account.

What are whole dollar round-ups?

Some purchases are already made in whole dollar amounts, such as $5.00 or $10.00.

Feijoa allows users to choose an additional amount to contribute on these transactions as well. Within the app, users can set an amount between $0.00 and their chosen round-up amount to apply when a purchase is already a whole dollar figure.

How are projections calculated?

Projections provided by Feijoa are calculated in accordance with the Financial Markets Conduct Regulations 2014 and displayed in today’s money.

Projections are based on:

  • median round-ups and rewards from the previous 365 days, or less for newer users
  • the recipient’s retirement age
  • selected settings and assumptions
  • Feijoa also notes that assumptions may include:
  • an annual return based on fund type
  • a default balanced fund assumption where no fund type has been set
  • annual spending growth
  • inflation adjustments
  • an assumed age where date of birth has not been provided

Where relevant, Feijoa may also include an assumption relating to government contributions.

How do I know Feijoa and Akahu are secure?

Akahu has been independently certified as compliant with ISO 27001:2022, a global standard for information security management.

Both Feijoa and Akahu use modern cloud services (AWS) in order to leverage their world leading infrastructure and security controls, use modern encryption standards like AES 256 and TLS to keep your data safe and private, and carry out regular internal and external security testing.

Feijoa never handles your financial account credentials (all access is managed via Akahu), encrypts your data both in transit and rest and performs regular monitoring of all transactions to highlight any irregularities.

Does Feijoa provide a financial service?

Feijoa provides automated transaction services that facilitate round-ups from linked accounts into nominated KiwiSaver accounts.

Feijoa does not:

  • directly access a KiwiSaver account
  • provide financial advice
  • hold or manage KiwiSaver funds.

What happens if I get a new phone or delete the app?

Nothing. Things still work the same. Your account is cloud based. However, you will not be able to reconfigure things and stop round-ups without the app.

Who’s behind Feijoa?

Feijoa is a Wellington-based team with financial markets experience, focused on helping New Zealanders build future wealth through simple, everyday saving behaviour.
